blågårdens bibliotek
This project is a transformation of an old church in Copenhagen, Denmark into a new community library. I approached this project with the idea that there needed to be something added to the church. There simply was not enough space in the existing building to accommodate a new library. With that in mind I chose to keep the outer shell of the church and turn the already cozy hall into something of a living-room for the city — a place for people to dwell, read, relax, and socialize. The primary program of the library (i.e. book collection, computer lab, etc) are contained in the two story box that I elevated above the existing shell. The top story of this addition is intended as a children’s area. The basic moves of the project include the removal of all existing interior walls and roof structure, the addition of a box meant to fit inside the shell, and some selective carving of the exterior to provide new circulation paths between the main hall and the outdoor patios.
